Mindfulness Meditation

Present and calm in the moment…

Mindfulness meditation is a secular form of meditation with its roots in one of the most ancient meditation practices taught by the Buddha and practiced for over 2,500 years. It is designed to help us overcome our suffering so we can achieve true inner peace and happiness. Meditation helps us develop mindfulness so we can become aware of the sources of our suffering, and ultimately transcend it.

This is a completely different approach to happiness than what most of us are familiar with. We generally think of happiness as feeling good: that is, sensory pleasure or emotional gratification.

The problem with seeking happiness in this way is that the feelings are fleeting and temporary. For example, we enjoy a well-prepared meal for just the few minutes that we’re eating it. When it’s gone, the sad or painful feelings creep back in and we may say to ourselves, “What’s next…?”

Through Mindfulness Meditation, the sources of suffering are revealed. Slowly, you learn to sit with them in meditation, and like the clouds passing through the sky, those thoughts and feelings will eventually pass, leaving you with a sense of peace and tranquility.

Sherry received lay vows in 1992 through the Bhavana Society in West Virginia, a Theravada Buddhist community. Through the years she acquired many hours in mindfulness studies and is in the process of receiving certification in Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program.
